Shirock at the Roxy

I always love a good rock show – they’re intense and a lot of fun to shoot. Shirock, a new band from the Midwest, did not disappoint at their recent performance at the Roxy on Sunset.

Shadmehr Aghili @ Nokia Club 6/20

´╗┐´╗┐Last Saturday was an extremely long, but fun, day for me… hot on the heels of a for-fun shoot, I was hired to shoot an Iranian pop star at the Nokia Club. I figured, hey, why not?

These are the guys who opened for him, above. I’d always wanted to shoot at a venue with a balcony, like the Nokia Club had, but I think I’m finding I prefer the tight intimacy of a lower, close-on angle where there isn’t as much distance between you and the artist, and where the artist is level or elevated relative to you.

I had no idea what he was saying (he was singing in Farsi) but damned if this guy wasn’t flexible. He was on the guitar and violin, doing great vocals the whole time.

This is where I found out the guy had a rabid following in the Iranian community in LA.

Every song had a different set of dancers – they had dudettes on stilts, the Flamenco dancers above and a bunch of other ones.
I was ON the stage for this shot. As in, audience could see me (barely). Nobody batted an eye. I think they were all too busy having fun.

Vaud and the Villains @ the Edison 5/20

These guys are unlike anything I’ve ever seen at a show, and I’ve shot quite a few. They’re easily the largest single group of performers I’ve seen – there are 13 of them, playing every instrument imaginable – and they bring in this early 20th-century vibe that is absolutely amazing. If you think your dad’s sneakers are retro, you’ve got to see these guys in their 1930s-era clothes rocking the house.

They were pretty cramped on the stage of the Edison, a trendy technopunk nightclub in Downtown, but they managed to make it work.

I pushed the D700 to its limits, as the venue was not very well-lit. ISO 6400 looks absolutely amazing!

The focal length selection also makes a lot more sense on full-frame – all of my lenses become wider, which is really useful for shots like this:

HapaSC’s Mix n’ Match

I was asked by a friend to come in and shoot a benefit concert at Ground Zero, USC’s performance cafe. It turns out her organization was putting on an event to raise awareness about leukemia and the difficutly people of mixed descent have in finding bone marrow donors – hence the event being called “mix n’ match”.

They brought in some good music – the beautiful Marie Digby managed to drop by, and Antonio Pontarelli rocked out hard on stage, violin and all.
